State Standards
Florida: by Debbie Denise Reese Ph.D.
The CyGaMEs team aligned the
Selene learning environment with the Florida Next Generation Sunshine State Standards: Science (NGSSS, adopted February 2008). Florida educators may appreciate that students register to play
Selene in English or Spanish (see
http://selene.cet.edu/Default.aspx?page=español). You will find highlighted components for game-to-standards alignment below. Please download the
PDF for the complete alignment between CyGaMEs
Selene and FSSS: Science (ages nine and older) big ideas, benchmark codes, and benchmarks. The full alignment includes:
- Big Idea 1: The Practice of Science
- Big Idea 2: The Characteristics of Scientific Knowledge
- Big Idea 3: The Role of Theories, Laws, Hypotheses, and Models
- Big Idea 5: Earth in Space and Time
- Big Idea 6: Earth Structures
- Big Idea 8: Properties of Matter
- Big Idea 9: Changes in Matter
- Big Idea 11: Energy Transfer and Transformations
- Big Idea 12: Motion of Objects
- Body of Knowledge: PHYSICAL SCIENCES
- Body of Knowledge: EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE
- Standard 5: Earth in Space and Time
- Standard 6: Earth Structures
- Body of Knowledge: NATURE OF SCIENCE
- Standard 1: The Practice of Science
- Standard 2: The Characteristics of Scientific Knowledge
Highlighted Alignment Components: Selene Gameplay Goals with Embedded Assessment and NGSSS: Science
Big Idea 6: Earth Structures |
SC.7.E.6.3 | Identify current methods for measuring the age of Earth and its parts, including the law of superposition and radioactive dating.
Cognitive Complexity: Level 2: Basic Application of Skills & Concepts | This is the key concept of the Selene surface features module. Selene players actually cause the superposition of features and material on the Moon. |
Body of Knowledge: EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE Standard 5: Earth in Space and Time |
SC.912.E.5.5 | Explain the formation of planetary systems based on our knowledge of our Solar System and apply this knowledge to newly discovered planetary systems.
Cognitive Complexity: Level 3: Strategic Thinking & Complex Reasoning | This is the science of Selene. Selene gameplay will prepare them for this transfer task. |
SC.912.E.6.1 | Describe and differentiate the layers of Earth and the interactions among them.
Cognitive Complexity: Level 2: Basic Application of Skills & Concepts | Selene players cause their moon to differentiate into layers. They determine the relative proportions of those layers by their Selene accretion gameplay. This experience acts as concrete prior knowledge to support knowledge construction about the layers of Earth. |
SC.912.E.6.2 | Connect surface features to surface processes that are responsible for their formation.
Cognitive Complexity: Level 2: Basic Application of Skills & Concepts | Selene players construct the surface of the moon according to impacting cratering and volcanism. This experience acts as concrete prior knowledge to support knowledge construction about surface processes that are responsible for the formation of some of Earth’s surface structures. |
