Carnegie Mellon’s Entertainment Technology Center designs a galactic welcome for the CyGaMEs team.Students at Carnegie Mellon University's Entertainment Technology Center learned about the CyGaMEs approach to instructional game design and assessment used in the creation of the Selene videogame during a presentation Feb. 11.

Dr. Debbie Denise Reese, head of the Selene and CyGaMEs projects at the Center for Educational Technologies®, was joined by fellow CyGaMEs team members Dr. Chuck Wood and Lisa McFarland.

Reese illustrated CyGaMEs concepts, techniques, and findings with examples from Selene: A Lunar Construction GaME. She gave pointers on how to apply cognitive science structure mapping theory to design videogames that ready learners for knowledge acquisition and how to measure and analyze the effects of game-based learning.

Wood introduced students to the new NASA-sponsored Classroom of the Future project that will produce MoonWorld, a lunar simulation in the Second Life virtual world to engage players in field work as lunar geologists working on a virtual Moon.
