Selene: a lunar construction game

NASA Videogame Highlighted at AECT Conference

Date Posted: Fri Nov 9 2007

Selene, the videogame created by the NASA-sponsored Classroom of the Future to study how students can best learn NASA science, was featured at the Association for Educational Communications and Technology annual conference.

The Design and Development Showcase at the 2007 conference highlighted innovative training and educational programs that are grounded in theory and research. Only 40 percent of the proposals submitted were selected for the showcase at the conference held Oct. 23-27 in Anaheim, CA.

In addition, the lunar science online game was the focus of a 30-minute workshop delivered at the workshop by Dr. Debbie Denise Reese, senior educational researcher at the Classroom of the Future™ and leader of the Selene project. “Finding Flow with Game-based Reflective Tools: Instructional Game Design for Adaptive Expertise” recounted the efforts of the Classroom of the Future, to design the Selene videogame for NASA this year. The workshop focused on the concept of flow, when learners reach a “learning zone” during their gameplay.
