Classroom of the Future Researcher Tabbed for MacArthur Study

Dr. Debbie Denise Reese, lead designer of the Selene videogame project created at the NASA-sponsored Classroom of the Future to study videogame learning, was recently interviewed as part of the John and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation's Digital Media and Learning Initiative.

Blueprint Research & Design Inc. has been hired by the MacArthur Foundation to interview experts from various industries, fields, and perspectives about the technology-related changes affecting how young people learn. Reese was chosen for her work with the NASA-funded research into how videogames can best be designed to help students learn science concepts. She has led the design of the Selene videogame, which teaches players about how the Moon was formed. The Selene research kicked off in May and is ongoing.

According to its website, the MacArthur Foundation launched its five-year, $50 million digital media and learning initiative in 2006 to help determine how digital technologies are changing the way young people learn, play, socialize, and participate in civic life. Answers are critical to developing educational and other social institutions that can meet the needs of this and future generations. The initiative is both marshaling what is already known about the field and seeding innovation for continued growth.
