The National Science Foundation (NSF) Science360 News honored CyGaMEs and its Selene instructional video game as the June 16, 2015 "Picture of the Day." According to the website, "Science360 is an up-to-date view of breaking science news from around the world."




Reese Wins 2015 Outstanding Instructional Design and Development Practice Award

The Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) Design and Development division awarded Dr. Debbie Denise Reese its 2015 Outstanding Practice Award for the CyGaMES 8.7 version of Selene: A Lunar Construction GaME. New features within this release provide an Integrated Assessment and Reporting System. Judging committee chair Dr. Brenda Bannon described the CyGaMEs Selene project as "innovative" and "truly a comprehensive, cutting edge example of current outstanding practice in the field of educational technology."



TICL Awards Reese and Colleagues 2015 Outstanding International Research Collaboration

TICL awarded CyGaMEs principal investigator Debbie Denise Reese, Ph.D., and colleagues Leticia Martín Hernández, Ph.D., and Carlos Álvarez Iglesias, Ph.D., its 2015 Outstanding International Research Collaboration Award. The award recognizes international research collaborators who make substantial scholarly contributions to the intersection of four disciplines: technology, instruction, cognition and learning. The award committee evaluated the quality of the collaborators' scholarly output, excellence of scholarship related to technology, instruction, cognition, and learning (TICL); and the demonstrated impact of the international research collaboration. According to the Awards Committee, the CyGaMEs nominees showcased "international excellence in TICL." Eligibility required each collaborating researcher hold a Ph.D. in domain of specialization.

In MoonWorld students through their avatars play lunar geologists. conducting a lunar field research inquiry. They drive a rover across the surface of the Moon, closely observing the terrain, collecting samples, and taking measurements to figure out the Moon’s history. When they return to the lunar base, they synthesize their data and control the life support system to pump enough water, air, and food.

Members of the Astronomy Society of the Pacific will learn about NASA-funded research into videogame design at their annual conference.

Dr. Chuck Wood, director of the NASA-sponsored Classroom of the Future, and Dr. Debbie Denise Reese, senior educational researcher at the Classroom of the Future™, will present a poster session entitled “Selene: A Videogame for Learning About the Moon.” The session will highlight the Classroom of the Future’s work in designing Selene and using it to study how kids learn through videogames. The research started in May and is ongoing. In Selene players learn how the Moon was formed and get a chance themselves to help in its creation.
