Meet State and National Science Standards Through Award-Winning Gameplay: Spanish Selene

Spanish Selene

Bienvenido to the Spanish language version of Selene! The new edition brings the award-winning game to untapped audiences. One in six Americans are of Hispanic origin, and Hispanics are the fastest growing sector of the U.S. population. Predictions expect current ethnic minorities will constitute the majority of U.S. population in the not too distant future. Now, many students considered to be English language learners can learn in their dominant language how the Earth's Moon was formed some 4.5 billion years ago. The Spanish version also helps in America's efforts to improve student performance and encourage career choices in the STEM areas—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Astrophysicist Dr. Leticia Martín Hernández has translated the entire Selene gameplay while doing postdoctoral work on a master's degree in science translation. A native and resident of the Canary Islands, she emphasizes localization in her translations, ensuring that the work conforms to its original intent, yet communicates within the target culture.

NABE LogoDual language Selene is released in partnership with the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE). Dr. Santiago Wood executive director of the organization wrote, “The Executive Board of the National Association for Bilingual Education fully supports our partnership with the CyGaMEs project. NABE is very excited and feels honored to form a very promising relationship with CyGaMEs and the Selene project that we believe will be very beneficial for our bilingual and English learners and will serve as another effective tool in the hands of our teachers toward sustainable academic achievement in STEM. I look forward to working with you toward a very successful, lasting, and mutually beneficial partnership for both institutions.” The National Association for Bilingual Education is the only national professional organization devoted to representing bilingual learners and bilingual education professionals. They work as advocates to influence and create policies, programs, research, pedagogy and professional development to promote what's in the best interest of a diverse-multilingual-multicultural society.
